How do I set up an e-Mail account in Outlook Express 3.0 or above?

These instructions are written for Microsoft Outlook Express 6. They will work with Outlook Express 3.0 and above, but some of the screen shots may look different, and some of the names may change.

These instructions are written for Microsoft Outlook 2000. They will work with Outlook 98, but some of the screen shots may look different, and some of the names may change.

Launch Outlook by double clicking on the icon for it. Select Tools then Accounts...

In the new window that appears, select Add, then Mail.

The following screens will appear. Here I am setting up an account for Joe Bloggs on the InternetDesign.com server, with the mail address of Joe.Bloggs@InternetDesign.com and the account name of id01.

Next type in your e-Mail address.

Now you need to tell Outlook what type of account you have, and where it can be found. You need to select POP3 from the drop down menu (this is usually preselected). If your web site is not an e-Commerce site then both the incoming and outgoing servers will be www.YourDomain.com.

Next is user name and password. These need to be entered EXACTLY as they were sent to you. In the example, the user name is id01. Id01, iD01, and ID01 would not work. Your password will have been sent to you separately.

You may not want your computer to remember your e-Mail password, especially if you are using a notebook computer, or a computer in a public area. If you don't have your computer remember your password then you will have to type it in every time you send or receive e-Mail.

You must not tick the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)" box unless your domain has been set up for that service.

Next you need to tell outlook how you are going to connect to the Internet. If you have a Dial up account, select Connect using my phone line. If you connect through a LAN (DSL, Cable modem, office network) then select Connect using my local area network (LAN).

Finally you will see a Congratulations page. Click on "Finish" and you are done. You may want to make some advanced settings also. To do so go to our our advanced setting page.
