A Human Touch in a Digital World™

Why can I not see a page I just uploaded?

There are two possible reasons for this - human error or computers trying to help you.

Make sure that you have named the file correctly, with the right file extension, and uploaded it to the correct folder. Remember that all of the following files are different - and can exist in the same folder on the same server even though some of them could not exist in the same folder in Windows:

Index.htm
index.htm
Index.html
Index.HTML
index.html

If human error is not the cause of the missing changes, then caching is. A cache is a collection of web pages stored either by your computer or your ISP's computers (your ISP is the company that connects you to the Internet) to speed up your access.

Your web browser stores pages so that if you go back to a page, you don't have to wait for it to download again, your browser will just get the copy it has on your hard-disk. You can fix this easily enough - click reload, or refresh (depending on your browser) - if you don't see your changes, try doing that again, only holding down the CTRL key on your PC keyboard, or the Apple key on your Apple keyboard when you click.

If this does not show you your page, then it is your ISP's cache. You can try refreshing a lot of times quickly - that makes some ISP's refresh their cache, or you will have to wait until they update.

AOL and Compuserve are probably the worse when it comes to running out-of-date caches. If they are your ISP, there is not much you can do if you are affected - just wait, and try back in an hour or two - or the next day. You can always switch to a local ISP - who aside from (usually) much better service, also (usually) have much smaller and better managed caches.
